S80 Victorian Championship

10 – 12 January 2014


Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron (RMYS), as the Organising Authority (OA), on behalf of the S80 Association of Victoria (S80 AV), invites entries for the 2014 S80 Victorian Championship, to be held on the waters of Port Phillip in the vicinity of Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron on 10 – 12 January 2014.

  1. 1.    Rules

The 2014 S80 Victorian Championship will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) and the Special Regulations of Yachting Australia (YA) Part 1, Sections 1-6, Category 6 shall apply. Marine VHF radios shall be carried on all racing boats.

  1. 2.    Eligibility and Entry 

2.1 The Regatta is open to all boats of the S80 class that comply with the Class Rules of the S80 Association of Victoria and have a valid weight certificate. Provision for weighing boats can be made by arrangement with the S80 Association of Victoria Race Secretary. Any owner requiring boat weighing should advise the S80 Association Race Secretary well before the series. Check weighing may be ordered by the S80 Association of Victoria at any time during the regatta.

2.2 Owners of all boats shall, as part of the entry form, submit to the Organising Authority, a Category 6 Safety Declaration confirming the boat’s compliance with YA ADDENDUM A, YA Special Regulations, Part 1 as detailed in the RRS.  A declaration confirming compliance is included in the Entry form.

2.3 Each skipper shall be a member of Yachting Australia (YA), through an affiliated yacht club and shall comply with the S80 Association “Owner Driver” Rules as specified in the S80 Association of Victoria Championship Rules.

2.4 All skippers S80s shall, prior to the start of the regatta, be financial members of the S80 Association of Victoria.

2.5 Each boat shall be helmed throughout the series by the skipper(s) nominated on the entry form, unless a written request is made to the Race Committee stating the reason for requesting a change of skipper. Written approval must be granted by the Race Committee prior to any change of skipper.

2.6 No distinction shall be made between the iron and the lead keel versions of the S80.

2.7 Each race of the series shall be sailed with a crew number not exceeding five, including the skipper.

2.8 Entries, together with the entry fee shall be made via the S80 website. Entries shall be received until Sunday 5  January 2014.

2.9 Entries may be accepted after the closing date at the discretion of the Organising Authority, and shall be subject to an additional late entry fee.

  1. 3.    Fees

The entry fee is $ 260.00 (including GST) per boat.

There is also a requirement to purchase at least 3 tickets to the S80 function to be held on Saturday 11th January @ $35.00 a head. Additional tickets can be purchased via the entry form.

All skippers are encouraged to resolve the number of tickets required for the Saturday night function and purchase them at the time of paying the race entry fee.

The late entry fee is $ 35.00 per boat and applies after 5 January 2014

4.3 The warning signal for back to back races will be made as soon as practicable after the finish of the previous race

4.4 No warning signal will be made after 1500hrs on Sunday 12 January 2014, subject to the discretion of the Race Committee.

4.5 There shall be no resails, of an abandoned race after 1500hrs on Sunday 12 January 2014.

  1. 5.    Safety Requirements and Measurement

5.1 YA Addendum A, Special Regulations Category 6 shall apply.

5.2 Boats not fitted with an inboard engine shall carry an outboard motor which shall at all times be operational and capable of driving the boat in smooth water at a speed exceeding 4 knots.

5.3 When not in use the motor may be carried below decks or mounted in the normal operating position.

5.4 A minimum of 5 litres of fuel shall be carried in the stern locker in an approved container which can be connected to the motor. Boats with an inboard engine shall carry a minimum of 5 litres of fuel in their fuel tank.

5.5 Anchor, anchor chain, and anchor warp conforming to YA Special Regulations must be carried in the anchor well in the bow at all times during racing.

5.6 Boats shall comply with the measurement requirements of the Class Rules of the S80 Association of Victoria. A copy of the Class Rules can be obtained via the website www.s80.org or by contacting the Race Secretary. Arrangements must be made to have any new sails measured prior to the series. Any owner requiring sail measurement should advise the S80 Association of Victoria Racing Secretary well before the series.

5.7 Boats and entrants shall comply with the Championship Rules of the S80 Association of Victoria. A copy of the Championship Rules can be obtained via the website www.s80.org or by contacting the race secretary.

5.8 Boats and their equipment including safety equipment may be subject to random inspection, at the discretion of the Race Committee.

5.9 The Race Committee may have any boat or sails re-measured at any time during the series.  A Boat notified of inspection shall follow the instructions of the Race Committee.

  1. 6.    Sailing Instructions

6.1 Sailing Instructions will be made available on the website www.s80.org by mid December 2013.  Further copies will be available at Registration at RMYS.

  1. 7.    Venue

7.1 The primary race area will be on Port Phillip Bay, west and north west of Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron.

  1. 8.    The Courses

8.1 The courses to be sailed will be described in the Sailing Instructions.

  1. 9.    Scoring System

9.1 Seven (7) races are scheduled of which 3 are required to be completed to constitute a series.

9.2  When fewer than 6 races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of

her race scores. This changes rule A2.

10. Penalty System

10.1 For infringements of Class rules 4, 8 and 9 the penalty may be less than disqualification if the protest committee so decides.

11. Support Boats

11.1 All support boats including boats containing team leaders, coaches and other support personnel shall keep a minimum of 100m clear of any competing boat in the course area between the warning signal and the finish time of the last boat in each race, except when requested to assist by the Race Committee.  This does not include official boats provided by the S80 Association of Victoria or RMYS.

12. Haul-Out Restrictions

12.1 All boats shall be in the water before 09:30 on the day of the first scheduled race, and shall not be hauled out during the regatta except with and according to the terms of prior written permission of the Race Committee.

13. Radio Communications

13.1 Except in an emergency, a boat shall neither make radio transmissions whilst racing nor receive radio communications not available to all boats. This restriction also applies to mobile telephones.

Presentation of trophies and prizes will be made in the RMYS clubhouse after racing on Sunday 12th January 2014.

15. Disclaimer of Liability

15.1 All those taking part in this regatta do so at their own risk and responsibility and are responsible for the seaworthiness of a boat whose entry is accepted and for the sufficiency and adequacy of its equipment.  Neither Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron nor the S80 Association of Victoria, their servants or volunteers shall accept liability or responsibility whatsoever for death or any personal or material damage sustained by participants before, during or after the regatta.

15.2 Attention is drawn to Fundamental Rule 4 which states: “The responsibility for a boat’s decision to participate in a race or to continue racing is hers alone”.

16. Insurance

16.1 All competing boats competing in the 2014 S80 Victorian Championship shall have current insurance cover in respect of physical damage and third party liability cover with an indemnity limit of not less than AUD$10,000,000 or equivalent thereof in any other currency for any accident.

16.2 All owners/competitors who sign the Entry Form are deemed to have made a declaration that they hold such cover.

16.3 Competitors may be required to produce evidence of such insurance at registration and any competitor not holding this cover may have their entry rejected of cancelled.
